Three Cheers was requisitioned for naval service on 25 November 1942. The vessel was new and without an engine. On 12 November 1943 she was purchased by the Commonwealth.
It was originally intended to employ Three Cheers as a submarine indicator loop repair vessel but in May 1943 it was decided to convert her for use as a diving boat.
In March 1944 the approval to use Three Cheers as a diving boat was cancelled and it was decided to employ her on general duties in northern waters. It was also decided to install a 160 hp Vivian diesel engine.
Three Cheers commissioned on 20 October 1944 under the command of Temporary Commissioned Officer from Warrant rank George N Robinson, RANR(S) and on 14 November 1944 she left Sydney for New Guinea where she served for some five months as a pilot vessel at Hollandia. After further service at Moratai and Thursday Island Three Cheers returned to Sydney in early January 1946.
Three Cheers paid off on 20 February 1946 to await disposal. In June 1946 she was sold to her former part-time owner Mr AW Settree.
