Abstract

This paper explores the naval strategic history of the Asia-Pacific region, providing a context for understanding current and prospective regional developments by applying a thematic approach to demonstrate that strategy is about choices conditioned by context. The paper contains three main sections: development of the region’s strategic character from 1500-1900, continuity and change in the 20th century, and current and future issues in the light of history. Upon tracing the history of naval development in the region the author concludes that the current vogue for power projection from the sea remains highly relevant to the region, as is the enabling factor of blue water sea control.
