
Lieutenant Robert Rushby joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 2017. He is a member of the Maritime Trade Operations Team One (MTOT1), which provides liaison between the RAN, Australian Defence Force and the Australian maritime and shipping industries in order to facilitate the protection of maritime trade.
In his civilian career, Robert is Director Counter-Terrorism Asia and Africa with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. From late 2016 through to early 2020, Robert undertook a posting as Counsellor (London), having responsibility for Australia’s relationship with border and enforcement agencies in the United Kingdom and Europe. Robert has performed a variety of policy development, managerial, international liaison, program implementation and operational roles with Home Affairs, Australian Border Force and forerunner organisations, including a posting in Japan from 2006 to 2009 and serving as Chief of Staff and Director Operational Planning in Border Protection Command from 2010 to 2012.
Robert started his public service career as a graduate with the Department of Defence in 1994, being promoted in various roles as a strategic intelligence analyst and manager in the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO). His intelligence career included selection for senior intelligence courses with the Defense Intelligence Agency in the United States and a 12-month secondment with the New Zealand Defence Force Headquarters in Wellington, New Zealand.
